What is Internal Medicine?

Internal medicine is the specialty of clinical laboratory science combined with personal, compassionate care regarding adult medicine.  It focuses on using the best medical science available as well as creating meaningful doctor-patient relationships.  This specialized skill set allows physicians to treat both common illnesses as well as complex medical conditions.  These doctors are particularly well trained in the ongoing care of chronic illnesses, diagnosing difficult medical problems, and treating patients with multiple diseases.

“Internists” or “general internists” are the terms used for doctors who specialize in internal medicine. Since their training is concentrated solely on adults, internists are not family physicians, family practitioners, or general practitioners but may act as an adult’s primary care physician.
